“Who is this Colin Miller guy?” “Did you mean Kevin Miller?” “That the guy we traded for looch?” These are common questions heard amongst Boston Bruins fans as the 15-16 season approaches. When defensemen Colin Miller was traded from the Los Angeles Kings to the Boston Bruins on June 26th, there was a chance Miller could make the opening night roster. With the recent injury to Dennis Seidenberg, it’s more probably then not, that the former pride of the Manchester Monarchs will make the opening night roster.

So who is Colin Miller?

Selected 151st overall in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the LA Kings, Miller has spent his last two seasons playing only 45 minutes north of Boston, in Manchester. In 135 games with the Monarchs, Miller tallied 24 goals and 45 assists, 19 of those goals came this past season, where Miller was 3rd on the Monarchs in points with 52 (19g, 33a). Miller led the AHL in goals by a defensemen in his 14-15 campaign with the Monarchs and also led the team to a Calder Cup Championship.ThunderousWindyHumpbackwhale

The 2014-15 season was a good one for Miller. Not only did he lead his team to a Calder Cup Championship and lead the AHL in goals by a defensemen, Miller was named to the All-Star Game, where, not only did he win the fastest skater completion, he won the fastest shot competition also, with a 105.5 mph cannon.

Miller’s play completely transformed from his first season in Manchester, to his second. The new Bruin attributes a lot of that to his former teammates and the farm system in the Kings organization. ““I think that team in Manchester has a lot of players that are hopefully right there and close to making the jump [to the NHL], so they made it easy for me to kind of get in there and do my thing.” Miller told BostonBruins.com

So this ‘Miller guy’ was a stud in Manchester, but how will his game translate into the NHL?

“He did have a breakout year. His game was really loose, he had offensive instincts, he’s got a good shot from the offensive blueline. There’s some structure in Colin’s game now that goes along with those offensive instincts. [He] is willing to transition pucks, and he is a guy that we identified as a group that has sort of emerged — and hopefully will come in and challenge — because he’s got a lot of upside.” Don Sweeney told BostonBruins.com.

With high praise from GM Don Sweeney, the question arises whether or not Miller will make the opening night roster. “I think Colin is ready to push for a spot,” said Bruins GM Don Sweeney to BostonBruins.com. “I put him in the same category as some of these other players like Joe [Morrow] and Zach [Trotman], who had a good taste [of the NHL].

When opening night rolls around and the Winnipeg Jets come to town, I believe Colin Miller’s name will be called on that October 7th night and when that time comes, I expect Miller to be ready to show the fans of Boston what he brings to the table.
