Recap: Bruins Get 2-1 Shootout Win Over Devils

By: Mike Grinnell

On a day that is basically owned by another sport, the Bruins skated to a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday night.

Jonas Gustavsson made 29 saves on 30 shots for the Bruins, but it was Devils tender and former Boston College Eagle, Cory Schneider, who stole the show with 38 saves on 39 shots.

“Cory was great.” Devils coach John Hynes told reporters after Sunday nights loss. “Cory was excellent for us, you know, when they had pushes he was able to come up with some big saves and I think as the game wore on, you know, we battled really hard. And when we had a couple breakdowns they had a really good push there late in the third; Cory was excellent and obviously you saw what both goaltenders did in overtime.”

Loui Eriksson scored the only goal for the Bruins in regulation, 6:15 into the first period, on a backhand pass from David Krejci, for his 13th goal of the season. But it was Ryan Spooner who was the hero for the Bruins on Sunday night, scoring the only goal of the shootout.

“That’s a move I like to use and I’ve tried it a couple times and hit the post once, I think it was last year.  I just came in and saw that he was a little bit on his glove side so I just went with that.”

Spooner, who was 0-4 on the year before Sunday night, got a boost of confidence from his coach before he netted his first shoot out goal of the year.

“He said to me actually, he said “have confidence when you’re shooting, just like you do in practice” and I went out there and that’s the move that I use and it worked so that’s good.” Spooner told reporters after Sunday nights victory.

The Devils offense came in the second period, on a Lee Stempniak shot, that Andy Greene banged home for his 3rd goal of the season.

The Bruins will welcome the St. Louis Blues to the TD Garden on Tuesday, puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM. You can catch that game on ESPN New Hampshire. Coverage beginning at 6:00 PM with the Boston Bruins Pregame Show.
