Led by Alexander Ovechkin and Braden Holtby, The Boston Bruins fell to the Washington Capitals Thursday night at the Verizon Center.
Holtby made 28 saves and Ovechkin scored a high light real goal, putting the 9-3-0 Caps past the 6-5-1 Bruins 4-1.
The Bruins, who have lost their last two, after going 5-0-1 in their previous 6, got an early first period goal from Jimmy Hayes, who scored on the power play off a Brett Connolly shot deflected off Hayes’ shoulder, and into the net. After breaking Capitals goalie Braden Holtbys 199:33 shut out streak early in the game, the Bruins looked like they had finally found a way to beat Holtby, finally.
The Bruins would not score again, and the Capitals would score three unanswered goals from Alexander Ovechkin, who scored 17:27 into the first period, Ovechkin smacked the puck past Rask as he was falling on his back, a typical Ovechkin-high light real-goal.
Brooks Laich put the Capitals up 2-1 at the 4:10 mark of the second period, Laich cleaned up the trash in front of the net and put home the goal after a Dmitry Orlov shot.
John Carlson made it 3-1 scoring on a 5-3 after receiving a cross crease pass from Nicklas Backstrom.
Karl Azner added an open net goal with 1:50 remaining to seal the deal for the Capitals and finalize their 4-1 win.
Tuukka Rask made 27 saves on the night and allowed 3 goals. After struggling against the Stars Tuesday night, Rask put together a much better game Thursday, though Rask doesn’t look like his Vezina trophy-winning self.
The Bruins face off against the 12-2-1 Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Saturday. Puck drop scheduled for 7:00.
